{"id":1921,"date":"2014-11-03T02:11:02","date_gmt":"2014-11-03T02:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/12tribes.net\/bible\/1ma07\/"},"modified":"2019-08-28T13:41:42","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T17:41:42","slug":"1ma07","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/12tribes.net\/bible\/1ma07\/","title":{"rendered":"1 Maccabees 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"main\">\r\n<div class=\"chapterlabel\"><a name=\"V0\"><\/a> 7<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V1\"><\/a>1\u00a0<\/span>In the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome, and came up with a few men unto a city of the sea coast, and reigned there.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V2\"><\/a>2\u00a0<\/span>And as he entered into the palace of his ancestors, so it was, that his forces had taken Antiochus and Lysias, to bring them unto him.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V3\"><\/a>3\u00a0<\/span>Wherefore, when he knew it, he said, Let me not see their faces.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V4\"><\/a>4\u00a0<\/span>So his host slew them. Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V5\"><\/a>5\u00a0<\/span>There came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel, having Alcimus, who was desirous to be high priest, for their captain:<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V6\"><\/a>6\u00a0<\/span>And they accused the people to the king, saying, Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends, and driven us out of our own land.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V7\"><\/a>7\u00a0<\/span>Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go and see what havock he hath made among us, and in the king\u2019s land, and let him punish them with all them that aid them.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V8\"><\/a>8\u00a0<\/span>Then the king chose Bacchides, a friend of the king, who ruled beyond the flood, and was a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V9\"><\/a>9\u00a0<\/span>And him he sent with that wicked Alcimus, whom he made high priest, and commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V10\"><\/a>10\u00a0<\/span>So they departed, and came with a great power into the land of Judea, where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V11\"><\/a>11\u00a0<\/span>But they gave no heed to their words; for they saw that they were come with a great power.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V12\"><\/a>12\u00a0<\/span>Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of scribes, to require justice.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V13\"><\/a>13\u00a0<\/span>Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them:<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V14\"><\/a>14\u00a0<\/span>For said they, One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army, and he will do us no wrong.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V15\"><\/a>15\u00a0<\/span>So he spake unto them, peaceably, and sware unto them, saying, we will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V16\"><\/a>16\u00a0<\/span>Whereupon they believed him: howbeit he took of them threescore men, and slew them in one day, according to the words which he wrote,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V17\"><\/a>17\u00a0<\/span>The flesh of thy saints have they cast out, and their blood have they shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V18\"><\/a>18\u00a0<\/span>Wherefore the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people, who said, There is neither truth nor righteousness in them; for they have broken the covenant and oath that they made.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V19\"><\/a>19\u00a0<\/span>After this, removed Bacchides from Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bezeth, where he sent and took many of the men that had forsaken him, and certain of the people also, and when he had slain them, he cast them into the great pit.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V20\"><\/a>20\u00a0<\/span>Then committed he the country to Alcimus, and left with him a power to aid him: so Bacchides went to the king.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V21\"><\/a>21\u00a0<\/span>But Alcimus contended for the high priesthood.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V22\"><\/a>22\u00a0<\/span>And unto him resorted all such as troubled the people, who, after they had gotten the land of Juda into their power, did much hurt in Israel.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V23\"><\/a>23\u00a0<\/span>Now when Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites, even above the heathen,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V24\"><\/a>24\u00a0<\/span>He went out into all the coasts of Judea round about, and took vengeance of them that had revolted from him, so that they durst no more go forth into the country.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V25\"><\/a>25\u00a0<\/span>On the other side, when Alcimus saw that Judas and his company had gotten the upper hand, and knew that he was not able to abide their force, he went again to the king, and said all the worst of them that he could.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V26\"><\/a>26\u00a0<\/span>Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honourable princes, a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel, with commandment to destroy the people.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V27\"><\/a>27\u00a0<\/span>So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great force; and sent unto Judas and his brethren deceitfully with friendly words, saying,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V28\"><\/a>28\u00a0<\/span>Let there be no battle between me and you; I will come with a few men, that I may see you in peace.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V29\"><\/a>29\u00a0<\/span>He came therefore to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably. Howbeit the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by violence.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V30\"><\/a>30\u00a0<\/span>Which thing after it was known to Judas, to wit, that he came unto him with deceit, he was sore afraid of him, and would see his face no more.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V31\"><\/a>31\u00a0<\/span>Nicanor also, when he saw that his counsel was discovered, went out to fight against Judas beside Capharsalama:<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V32\"><\/a>32\u00a0<\/span>Where there were slain of Nicanor\u2019s side about five thousand men, and the rest fled into the city of David.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V33\"><\/a>33\u00a0<\/span>After this went Nicanor up to mount Sion, and there came out of the sanctuary certain of the priests and certain of the elders of the people, to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the burnt sacrifice that was offered for the king.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V34\"><\/a>34\u00a0<\/span>But he mocked them, and laughed at them, and abused them shamefully, and spake proudly,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V35\"><\/a>35\u00a0<\/span>And sware in his wrath, saying, Unless Judas and his host be now delivered into my hands, if ever I come again in safety, I will burn up this house: and with that he went out in a great rage.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V36\"><\/a>36\u00a0<\/span>Then the priests entered in, and stood before the altar and the temple, weeping, and saying,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V37\"><\/a>37\u00a0<\/span>Thou, O Lord, didst choose this house to be called by thy name, and to be a house of prayer and petition for thy people:<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V38\"><\/a>38\u00a0<\/span>Be avenged of this man and his host, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V39\"><\/a>39\u00a0<\/span>So Nicanor went out of Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bethhoron, where an host out of Syria met him.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V40\"><\/a>40\u00a0<\/span>But Judas pitched in Adasa with three thousand men, and there he prayed, saying,<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V41\"><\/a>41\u00a0<\/span>O Lord, when they that were sent from the king of the Assyrians blasphemed, thine angel went out, and smote an hundred fourscore and five thousand of them.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V42\"><\/a>42\u00a0<\/span>Even so destroy thou this host before us this day, that the rest may know that he hath spoken blasphemously against thy sanctuary, and judge thou him according to his wickedness.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V43\"><\/a>43\u00a0<\/span>So the thirteenth day of the month Adar the hosts joined battle: but Nicanor\u2019s host was discomfited, and he himself was first slain in the battle.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V44\"><\/a>44\u00a0<\/span>Now when Nicanor\u2019s host saw that he was slain, they cast away their weapons, and fled.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V45\"><\/a>45\u00a0<\/span>Then they pursued after them a day\u2019s journey, from Adasa unto Gazera, sounding an alarm after them with their trumpets.<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse\"> <a name=\"V46\"><\/a>46\u00a0<\/span>Whereupon they came forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and closed them in;
