Maschil of Asaph. <\/div>
\r\n 1\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Give ear, O my people, to<\/span> my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth. <\/div>
2\u00a0<\/a><\/span>I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: <\/div>
3\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. <\/div>
4\u00a0<\/a><\/span>We will not hide them<\/span> from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. <\/div>
5\u00a0<\/a><\/span>For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: <\/div>
6\u00a0<\/a><\/span>That the generation to come might know them, even<\/span> the children which<\/span> should be born; who<\/span> should arise and declare them<\/span> to their children: <\/div>
7\u00a0<\/a><\/span>That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: <\/div>
8\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that<\/span> set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God. <\/div>
9\u00a0<\/a><\/span>The children of Ephraim, being<\/span> armed, and<\/span> carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. <\/div>
10\u00a0<\/a><\/span>They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; <\/div>
11\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them. <\/div>
12\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in<\/span> the field of Zoan. <\/div>
13\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap. <\/div>
14\u00a0<\/a><\/span>In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. <\/div>
15\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them<\/span> drink as out of<\/span> the great depths. <\/div>
16\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. <\/div>
17\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness. <\/div>
18\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. <\/div>
19\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? <\/div>
20\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people? <\/div>
21\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Therefore the LORD heard this,<\/span> and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel; <\/div>
22\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation: <\/div>
23\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, <\/div>
24\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. <\/div>
25\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Man did eat angels\u2019 food: he sent them meat to the full. <\/div>
26\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind. <\/div>
27\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea: <\/div>
28\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And he let it<\/span> fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. <\/div>
29\u00a0<\/a><\/span>So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire; <\/div>
30\u00a0<\/a><\/span>They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was<\/span> yet in their mouths, <\/div>
31\u00a0<\/a><\/span>The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men<\/span> of Israel. <\/div>
32\u00a0<\/a><\/span>For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. <\/div>
33\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. <\/div>
34\u00a0<\/a><\/span>When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God. <\/div>
35\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And they remembered that God was<\/span> their rock, and the high God their redeemer. <\/div>
36\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. <\/div>
37\u00a0<\/a><\/span>For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant. <\/div>
38\u00a0<\/a><\/span>But he, being<\/span> full of compassion, forgave their<\/span> iniquity, and destroyed them<\/span> not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. <\/div>
39\u00a0<\/a><\/span>For he remembered that they were but<\/span> flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. <\/div>
40\u00a0<\/a><\/span>How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and<\/span> grieve him in the desert! <\/div>
41\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. <\/div>
42\u00a0<\/a><\/span>They remembered not his hand, nor<\/span> the day when he delivered them from the enemy. <\/div>
43\u00a0<\/a><\/span>How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: <\/div>
44\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink. <\/div>
45\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them. <\/div>
46\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust. <\/div>
47\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He destroyed their vines with ha\r\nil, and their sycomore trees with frost. <\/div>
48\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. <\/div>
49\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.<\/span> <\/div>
50\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; <\/div>
51\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their<\/span> strength in the tabernacles of Ham: <\/div>
52\u00a0<\/a><\/span>But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. <\/div>
53\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. <\/div>
54\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to<\/span> this mountain, which<\/span> his right hand had purchased. <\/div>
55\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. <\/div>
56\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies: <\/div>
57\u00a0<\/a><\/span>But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. <\/div>
58\u00a0<\/a><\/span>For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. <\/div>
59\u00a0<\/a><\/span>When God heard this,<\/span> he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel: <\/div>
60\u00a0<\/a><\/span>So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which<\/span> he placed among men; <\/div>
61\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy\u2019s hand. <\/div>
62\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance. <\/div>
63\u00a0<\/a><\/span>The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage. <\/div>
64\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation. <\/div>
65\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and<\/span> like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. <\/div>
66\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach. <\/div>
67\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim: <\/div>
68\u00a0<\/a><\/span>But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved. <\/div>
69\u00a0<\/a><\/span>And he built his sanctuary like high palaces,<\/span> like the earth which he hath established for ever. <\/div>
70\u00a0<\/a><\/span>He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds: <\/div>
71\u00a0<\/a><\/span>From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. <\/div>
72\u00a0<\/a><\/span>So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands. <\/div>
